rural building center

Building Centres have been set up all over the country with a view to provide a mechanism for technology transfer for propagating cost effective and environment friendly building technologies. Since there was a felt need for a Building Centre in the Ladakh region as well, the Ladakh Ecological Development Group took up the challenge to establish such a Centre for which the LAHDC Leh provided land measuring 26 Kanals to LEDeG in the solar township as envisaged in the approved layout plan. On the recommendation of the LAHDC, HUDCO, GOI sanctioned a grant of Rs 15.00 Lacs through the Ministry of Rural Development Government of India for raising basic Infrastructure with a contribution of Rs 6.00 Lacs from LEDeG.

The setting up of a building Centre was incorporated in the overall layout of plan of the Solar Township and it was envisaged that the centre would meet the requirement of the materials proposed to be used in the construction of the solar township. The Building centre became functional towards the end of 2003. As the proposed solar colony failed to materialize, the building centre went on producing materials like hollow concrete blocks, stabilized mud blocks etc. Efforts were made to market these materials to builders including PWD and Army contractors. A substantial number of hollow concrete blocks were supplied for the construction of the Pashmina processing Plant building at the industrial Area. LEDeG also used various technologies developed by the building centre in the construction of 100 KWs solar power house building at Tangtse setup by LEDeG in 2005 with support from Under India Canada Environment Facility (ICEF), MNRE, LAHDC Leh .
