| The organization has been active
in carrying out awareness programmes about environment, cultural
preservation and sustainable development during the last 23 years.
The various activities undertaken by LEDeG have been grouped into
five teams, each headed by a senior coordinator. A brief reflection
of each team of LEDeG follows:
Appropriate
Technology
Energy is a key input in the development
process of communities. Believing that conventional developments
rely on fossil fuel and capital intensive technology leading to
greater centralization and dependence on market economy, the group
has been trying to encourage a more decentralized approach of energy
production, based on renewable resources like sun and water, which
are available in abundance in the region. It has worked on a wide
range of such technologies by carrying out adaptive research to
suit local conditions, which have been disseminated in villages
throughout Ladakh. These include “trombe” (solar) walls
and direct gain for solar space heating, solar water heating systems,
solar ovens, solar parabolic reflector cookers (family types and
community units), hydraulic ram pumps, improved water mills, micro
hydro-electric installation and solar photo-voltaic (lanterns and
household units).
LEDeG has recently installed a 100KW
solar photovoltaic power plant in Ladakh, which has replaced the
diesel generator in operation. LEDeG has also installed 57 micro-hydro
units in remote corners of Ladakh.
Handicrafts
Since its formation, LEDeG has been working
towards the promotion and revitalization of traditional handicrafts
by providing training in various crafts and introducing new designs
based on traditional motifs. LEDeG has also played a pivotal role
for introduction of new techniques and technologies for production
of high quality products in the most efficient manner.
The Handicraft team conducts two types of training and programs:
1. Promotion of handicrafts for self-consumption
2. Promotion of handicrafts for income generation
In the latter case, necessary linkages like marketing, production
and quality assurance mechanism are developed. The final produce
is marketed through the LEDeG handicraft shop in Leh. It is presently
concentrating its efforts on increasing the volume and enhancing
the quality of products with proper institutional backup.
Agriculture
In the initial years of LEDeG’s
inception, its focus was on introduction of vegetables and production
techniques in different remote villages of Ladakh with proper backward
linkages like arrangement of good quality seeds and other inputs.
At present the major focus is not on production but on value addition
to existing agriculture and horticulture produce of Ladakh. This
includes introduction of various machines like solar dryer, pulping
machine, improved packaging of jam, juices etc.
Information and Education
The information and education team
conducts workshops, seminars, campaigns on environment and cultural
related issues pertaining to Ladakh region. During summer the team
conducts video shows for tourists at LEDeG’s Karzoo, Leh centre.
Watershed Program
LEDeG, in association with Ladakh
Autonomous Hill Development Council, has integrated watershed development
program in 12 villages of Nyoma block since year 1993. The main
objective of the program is to ensure holistic development of people
and natural resources in watershed belt.
