Group (LEDeG) is a Non-Governmental Organisation, which was registered
as a society in J&K state in 1983. Its goal is to promote ecological
and sustainable development of Ladakh, which harmonizes with and
builds on the traditional culture.
Since
its formation in the year 1983, Ladakh Ecological Development Group
(LEDeG), Leh, has been consistently dedicated towards serving the
under privileged people residing in structurally disadvantaged areas
of Ladakh and has been striving to address the environmental and
cultural issues affecting the people in the region.
Its partners through its history - BORDA, European Commission, GERES,
ICEF, MNES, LAHDC, CEE have sustained LEDeG’s growth.
Last three years have been a significant years for LEDeG. The Solar
Energy Society of India (Indian Section of International Solar Energy
Society) has conferred LEDeG with the SESI NGO Award for the year
2005 for promotion of renewable energy.
This comes as a great motivation to LEDeG and is recognition of
the untiring efforts of the LEDeG staff in promoting renewable energy
resources in this region.
The Group’s main office, library, craft shop and meeting hall
are at Karzoo Centre at Leh. It has another campus about two km
away where the workshop, store, agriculture and handicrafts units
including a solar heated hostel and guest house are located. The
group runs a Rural Building Centre near Choglamsar, on the outskirts
of Leh town. LEDeG’s branch office at Kargil looks after its
activities in Kargil district.
